Hello Anon. It's been 5 days. Sorry for letting you wait this long! I was busy with IRL stuff. Employment is great. So, why does Togainu suck ass in terms of writing? Well, before I'll go on a rant about it, I'm aware this was N+C's first game (I mean anyone could tell) and no matter how much I criticize this VN, it's still one of my favs. Even if it's crappy. Ok? Also, I think the writing isn't bad at all in Shiki's route. Not glaze, I'm gonna get into details. Stay with me now. The original plot isn't so bad, at all actually. What bothered me were the routes and the romance that followed. I'll explain myself now. Akira is introduced as the apathetic, nihilistic protagonist who has a hard time processing emotions, his own as well as those of others. But Akira’s personality may tend to fluctuate based on the route he’s in, shaped heavily by whichever love interest he’s paired with... which is inconsistent. The game completely abandons Akira’s core character themes, despite how heavily they’re emphasized in the beginning. You’d expect a sense of consistency from a story that puts so much weight on those traits early on, but instead, it tosses them aside when they become inconvenient. The only route where his character 'growth' isn't terribly forced to fit a romantic narrative is in Shiki's, which I'll come back to later. Basically, as the routes progress, Akira starts behaving in ways that contradict his foundation. He becomes emotional, vocal, and even oddly affectionate?, traits that feel like they were glued onto him to make the romances function. He shifts too easily, too *suddenly*, into someone he’s never been, and it breaks the sense of consistency. The bigger issue is that his development is always framed around a relationship. He doesn’t find meaning or direction on his own, it’s always through someone else. Again, excluding Shiki's path! I'll now explain my issue which each routes in order of how I completed them. I'll be excluding Arbitro's and the Executioners' since they're more like bad endings rather than actual routes. Also, this is about Lost Blood if you couldn't tell. I would've played True Blood but there's no English translation to be found and my Japanese levels aren't good enough to carry me throughout the entirety of that game. I’m gonna be honest, Keisuke’s route wasn’t unbearable to play through. Sure, he was frustrating as fuck (it’s okay, Keisuke, I still love you...kind of), but the real issue lies in the writing. What rubbed me the wrong way was how HE was the one who made the choice to take the drugs, even though no one forced his hand because boohoo "Meh weak so meh deserve it ", and yet Akira somehow gets painted as the bad guy for not knowing how to handle it. Like, great. I thought Akira was his childhood best friend, not his fucking babysitter. Then it made me wonder. Does Keisuke even actually love Akira? Because honestly, it reads less like love and more like projection. He clings to this idea of who Akira should be. What Keisuke loves isn’t Akira as a person; it’s his idealized version, something Keisuke can look up to. And when the real Akira doesn’t match up, he falls apart. I know some people may just brush it off as 'toxic yaoi', but that corny label doesn't make the writing better now does it? And guess what. Akira gets to deal with Keisuke's angsty self and his character goes completely 180 for his baby boy. It reads more like wishful thinking than a believable conclusion. Instead of working through what should be a deeply fractured dynamic, the game just brushes past it all so it can slap a happy label on an ending that, by all logic, should’ve been tragic or at least complicated. And in doing so, it sacrifices both realism and the integrity of Akira’s character. Can we also mention how Keisuke gets killed off in every other routes that aren't his? That's because he only turns into an inconvenience when it comes to romancing a different character and he'd become an obstacle for Akira if he was still alive. It's very noticeable in Nano's route. Just, whatever dude. Moving on. Rin. Oh sweet little Rin? Probably the worst path in the entire game. Actually, it WAS the worst. Not just probably. I didn't hate Rin as a character, but I certainly hated his route. The fact that he was basically the shota of the game didn't bother me. Anything to make the fujos happy I guess. What bothered me however was, like, everything else. Mind you, the name of the game is literally "Blood of the Reprimanded Dog". Blood. Okay. Now... where did the whole blood narrative go in Rin's route? That's right. It's nowhere to be found. And it's not something you can just skip through either. It's literally the core of the game. It's SO important. It was explored in all of the other routes. Why get rid of it here? Because it's inconvenient, and also because Rin is honestly a fucking random and had nothing to do with it. How cheap. His character overall just pissed me off. There's nothing worth mentioning about his route other than the fact that it completely butchered Akira's character, turning him into this curious, empathetic guy who wishes to understand his loved ones. Akira topping him was the cherry on top. Like it couldn't get any more out of character. There were a lot of unanswered questions left too. I have no clue if it was mentioned in any CD dramas since I only listened to Shiki's and Arbitro's. How did he kill Shiki. Seriously. How. Where did Nano go? What happened? Why did it take 5 whole years? Why did Akira wait that long for a stranger????? Fuck off. Motomi's turn... pppppssssfffh? Nothing to say honestly. I guess the game needed a DILF for equality. Can't just spoil the shotacons you know? I mean, I found it funny how he basically pulled a Taku Slow Damage and went from "Akira is my son" to "Akira is a hot babe I wanna put my dick in" and everything happened in a church because hey God gets to watch. What a good christian. Crazy development too! I just don't see why nor how this grown ass man would ever pop a boner around some kid who's old enough to be his son. Their chemistry felt more like a quiet comradeship or even a paternal vibe, but definitely not romantic tension. So when the route suddenly frames it as ouh love, it feels out of place. Like the game realized it needed to check the romance box but didn’t quite know how to get there with these two. Shiki's turn. My only issue with his route is that it should've been slow burn given the context they were in, and Togainu is anything but slow, which is a shame. The writing here was actually consistent, it didn't toss away Akira's core themes but rather explored them and then developed his character individually without having to rely on the love interest only. Also sorry not sorry but their dynamic was just the most interesting to explore. I definitely recommend reading Funuke's ShikiAki Meta on AO3. It explains *everything* I just said, but better ( https://archiveofourown.org/works/56805328 ) ! Nano's turn. Yawn? I was disappointed, especially after playing Shiki's route. I expected the same level of quality. Maybe that's my bad. Humorous but I genuinely believe he was supposed to be the canon love interest and N+C just said fuck that and made it Shiki instead because of how bland that dude is. Wow. Which is, yet again, such a shame. He's such an important character, why make him uninteresting? Him and Akira together was full-blown awkward energy. The whole thing they had wasn't deep. Wasn't romantic. It was just bleak, and not in a way that says anything meaningful. Sorry Anon. I got tired near the end if you couldn't tell and I sincerely didn't feel like going into details. Anon, you just gave me an excuse to go on a long rant about one of my special interests. Obviously you don't have to read it all since I already know I'll go off-topic. Spoilers ahead, assuming you finished the game. All of the main characters were genuinely so likeable to me I cannot pick a single favorite. They all have at least one trait that boosts them up in my eyes. Maybe I'll say Tomosane in terms of relatability? But I found Zakuro very cute... Yuki was also the coolest... Takuji was, Takuji. 😅 I'm a very tiny mixed about Hasaki cause of the incest trope they basically forced upon her, which was uncomfortable to sit through. All I could hope for was that she'd grow out of it since she seems like, 15. I loved Suba but I'm not gonna defend the pedo shit they kept flashing us with. I'll acknowledge the bad stuff just as much as the good stuff. Just like how I can say that Togainu had bad writing (friendly fire), I can also speak up about the unnecessary sex scenes in Suba. I'll talk about Togainu in details another day... "God forbid an eroge has sex scenes" Rather, God forbid the author throws his futanari fetish all over the place (hmm IMOI hmm). I need everyone who played Suba to check SCA-DI's twitter. Entirely. Mkay? I'm aware Eroges and Visual Novels have a very tied culture for a reason, but how does that excuse half of the scenes in Suba? Felt like they were just spamming sex scenes to fill up the 3 PAGES LONG ALBUM CG!!! Seriously. Now, I'm not a purist either. I didn't mind the sex between Yuki and Tomosane for example even though it wasn't necessary for the plot, but that was because they were both consenting adults (also if you know you know pretty sure that technically wasn't sex but. Shush. I'm not talking about that). Meanwhile, you're gonna tell me the Futa shit, Hasaki rooftop scene and Teacher sequence were needed? I'm not gonna mention Looking Glass Insects since Zakuro getting raped was sadly a part of the story. I had mixed feelings about that too since it was shock value all over the place. But it makes sense as to why it really pushed her over the edge. I've seen someone claim on vndb that the bullies were badly written because they 'didn't have a reason to bully Zakuro and Kimika', but that's just so not true! I'll explain. First, Kimika mentioned it being because they got called cute by one of the bullies' boyfriend (if my memory isn't betraying me?). So basically, it was out of jealousy. But second, and let's be real, bullies don't need a reason to bully you. They don't need to have a tragic homelife to turn out to be absolute assholes either. If they find you just off-putting enough, they'll mess with you. Not even! If you're a target in their eyes for some unfortunate reason, they'll pick on every single thing you'll do, whether it makes sense or not. Was the rape too much though? Was it a line not to cross? Well, of course it's taboo (for a good reason). But with the context they gave us (with Mamiya Takuji / Yuki and Zakuro being unaware of the DID), it did feel 'right' (for a terrible lack of better word) to throw there. It wasn't romanticized, which I'm fine with. Now that I mentioned the negative stuff, going back to something a little more positive... A thing I liked about Suba was the unreliable narrators, all over the place. Especially during the Takuji segment. It was refreshing to get multiple POVs and see how it adds up. Genuinely such an interesting way to build a story. Another thing I REALLY liked was the DID rep (how unexpected). Now, I know some people might interpret it differently with rather Tomo, Takuji & Yuki being multiple 'souls' in one body... which I'm also fine with! Both are valid interpretations. Yuki's dad had a reason to believe in it being spiritual, to cope with the loss of his daughter I'm pretty sure. But in the case of my own interpretation, I'm more tilted towards them being introjects / factives. A detail (that isn't really a detail since it's thrown right in your face) I liked is how the real Takuji and Tomosane 'switched' appearances, and how Tomosane got his back in the end. The symbolism went hard! I would talk about Ayana but she gave me a headache. I really need to play Tsui No Sora first to understand her better, which I tried to!! But I somehow got the original version in Japanese, so. Vntok is gatekeeping the remake so I gotta do my own research and find it on my own. Sad! I skipped breakfast to type this out.
